Kirkwood couple recall walking, biking area for more than 50 years
Tuesday, April 22, 2003
An article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tells the story of a couple who have lived over 50 years in Kirkwood, walking and bicycling throughout the community:
"We walk about three or four times a day, in different areas each time . . ." said Bobby Gehlert. . . .

[Her husband, Milt] said their love of hoofing is very economical. "I have a car that is 14 years old, and it has 51,000 miles on it," he said. . . .

Speaking of their youth, during the Great Depression:
"If you wanted to go somewhere, you walked or rode your bike," Bobby said . . .

Milt said he and his buddies in University City would ride their bikes regularly to a hobby shop at Compton and Shenandoah avenues in south St. Louis.

"What's that, about 10 miles? We thought nothing of riding down there back then."

Bobby added, "One of my favorite trips was when some of my girlfriends and I would ride our bikes up to the airport and watch the airplanes.
