The Kansas City, Missouri, recently received a fleet of ten bicycles as part of KC's "Go Green" program, which provides refurbished, green-painted bicycles to area businesses. According to the article in the Kansas City Star:

Go Green is the brainchild of Melinda Michael. Her concern about the environment prompted her to look for ways to reduce downtown traffic.

Five years ago, she applied for a federal grant for the bicycle program. She received a $66,000 three-year grant about 18 months ago with the help of the Metropolitan Energy Center.

The 12 participating organizations receive bicycles, tire pumps, maintenance kits, bicycle racks and helmets for free. Those who borrow the bicycles generally use them to run errands, attend meetings and go to lunch. Users must agree to wear helmets and receive training in bicycle safety. . . .

"In the downtown area, it's a lot easier and faster to get around on a bike," said Lisa Czubak, who works in the city manager's office and coordinates the Go Green program for City Hall. It's healthy. And it makes employees feel better, and helps the environment."
