The Nebraska Trails Foundation has hired Ross Greathouse and John Royster to produce and coordinate a plan for the "Quad State Trail":

The concept for the Quad State Trail Project is a system of interconnecting trails approximately 700 miles in length passing through the four states of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, including existing, planned and future connections. . . .

Brief Description of Trail: Begins in Marysville, KS on an old UP rail line now called the “Homestead Trail” going north to Beatrice and on to Lincoln, Nebraska, through Lincoln on planned or existing trails to the MoPac East Trail going 26 existing trail miles northeast and an additional eight planned trail miles to the Lied Platte River Bridge. There the Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District has planned and funded trails making the connection to Omaha, through Omaha on existing and planned trails to the new Missouri River pedestrian bridge to Council Bluffs, Iowa which will be bid this fall. Continuing through Council Bluffs on planned and existing trails, the Quad State Trail links up to the 70+-mile Wabash Trace Trail in Iowa into Missouri. From the end of the Wabash, a yet-to-be-determined route to St. Joseph, Missouri will go on through St. Joseph on existing and planned trails on to Kansas City. (Here the trail could go on both sides of the Missouri River to Greater Kansas City and also in the future could connect Marysville, KS and St. Joseph, Missouri.) The trails would continue through Kansas City on existing and planned trails and would connect to the KATY Trail in Clinton, Missouri and would follow it to St. Louis, Missouri, approximately 250 miles beyond. Finally, a small portion of the KATY Trail would need to be extended from St. Charles, MO to the Mississippi River.
