Student leads petition drive for safer route to school
Rebecca McGowan, 13, of Shawnee, KS, led a successful petition drive to have a pedestrian signal installed in front of her school. According to the
KCStar article:
A year ago, Rebecca talked to her principal, Dr. Gillian Williams and Shawnee Police Officer Craig Hermann about the possibility of petitioning the City Council to put in the signal. After securing their permission, Rebecca went about the tedious task of attempting to approach every student at her school.
The city council's vote came just in time for
Walk to School Day 2003 (Wed., Oct 8th), though the signal won't actually be installed until next spring.
