National AAA director says highway deaths must be treated as public health "epidemic"

article in the Kansas City Star quotes American Automobile Association National Director Robert L. Darbelnet:
"We in the highway safety community must develop collaborative relationships with public health officials in this country and abroad," Darbelnet said in a speech prepared for the Detroit Economic Club. "We must work closely with them to develop new and better ways to address the epidemic loss of life on our highways."
In his remarks, Darbelnet also praised the World Health Organization for selecting the theme of "Safe Roads" for World Health Day 2004 on April 7.
