How many drivers/non-drivers in Missouri?
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, there are approximately 4.23 million licensed drivers in Missouri as of September 2004 (
DWIData.org [PDF format] has a slightly different number).
The census bureau's
2003 estimate of Missouri's population is 5.7 million.
This means that 74% of Missourians have a driver's license and 26% do not.
Approximately 4.4 million Missourians are 16 or over (estimated, from Census data). Of those 4.23 million have driver's license or permit. That means 95.7 percent of those over 16 have a driver's license and 4.3% do not.
A related statistic:
According to the 2000 census, 181,000 Missouri households (8.3%) have no motor vehicle available. In some high-density Missouri cities the percentage of households with no automobile is as high as 25%.
Also
according to the census, over 75,000 Missourians (2.9%) walk or bike to work. This is higher than the percentage that uses public transportation (39,000 or 1.5%).
