If you know those shopping districts or others like them, you know the main appeal is that jumble of one-of-a-kind stores and restaurants that promise to resole your shoes, fix your window screens or get your lawn mower running again.

They don't make places like that anymore. Or when they try to, they often come off looking and feeling as phony as Main Street at Disney World.
