City and MoDOT officials in Columbia have been working to resolve an impass regarding bicycle and pedestrian accommodation on a planned reconstruction of Range Line Street (Hwy 763). According to a Columbia Daily Tribune article:

State plans submitted to the city in August call for the road to be widened, but they do not include suggestions from the city that include wider lanes, 10-foot shoulders and pedways - wider sidewalks suitable for bicyclists and wheelchair users. City officials have insisted on the improvements, arguing that roads in Columbia must provide for a variety of transportation options. . . .

Mayor Darwin Hindman, a vocal proponent of making the city’s streets more pedestrian-friendly, said he’s optimistic a plan for the road can be finalized in the near future. He also reiterated his support for the city’s proposals regarding the project.

"Streets are not complete if they don’t provide for a variety of transportation," he said.
