Today MoDOT announced the search for Missouri's first ever Safe Routes to School Coordinator.

Getting the right person in place will really help move bicycling and walking forward across the entire state of Missouri.

Application deadline is soon--December 7th, 2005.

We strongly urge anyone with an interest in this position to apply--even if you may not fulfill every jot and tittle of the listed requirements. If you have strengths in other areas, they may compensate.

Salary range is $49416 - $66948 (yearly).

Transportation Planning Coordinator/Safe Routes To School Coordinator

Location: MoDOT Central Office, 2211 St. Marys Blvd., Jefferson City

General Job Summary
The transportation planning coordinator/safe routes to school coordinator will be responsible for implementing a safe routes to school statewide program. The purpose of the program is to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school. The coordinator will facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects to support this program. Job responsibilities are performed under general supervision. Must have a Bachelor's Degree: Public or Business Administration, Planning, Civil Engineering, or related field. Registration as a Certified Planner or as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri must be attained within one year of assuming the job. Four years of experience in transportation engineering or planning.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Full supervision

Special Working Conditions/Job Characteristics:

Monthly salary range: $4118 - $5579 (yearly: $49416 - $66948)

Job requires occasional, statewide and out-of-state, overnight travel.

The coordinator will be responsible for implementing a safe routes to school statewide program. The purpose of the program is to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school. The coordinator will facilitate the planning,. development and implementation of projects to support this program. Job responsibilities are performed under general supervision.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree: Public or Business Administration, Planning, Civil Engineering, or related field.

Registration as a Certified Planner or as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri must be attained within one year of assuming the job.

Four years of experience in transportation engineering or planning.

Examples of Work:
(I) Facilitates the planning, development and implementation of projects that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of primary and middle schools.

(2) Responsible for developing the safety assessment process and implementation strategy.

(3) Coordinates and facilitates meetings with the safe routes to school advisory committee.

(4) Maintains necessary contact with local school, law enforcement and city personnel.

(5) Promotes projects directed at increasing the number of children walking and biking to school; coordinates promotion and education efforts with department staff, community and advocacy groups as necessary.

(6) Prepares and maintains the safe routes to school annual budget.

(7) Responsible for developing a grant administration process, managing the federal grant program, reviewing applications, and monitoring grant funding.

(8) Provides technical assistance in developing, advising, and implementing infrastructure proposals and changes.

(9) Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
