With area bicycle groups, pedestrian groups, and community leaders, MoBikeFed has been working with MoDOT on creating safe bicycle/pedestrian crossings of the Missouri River in the Kansas City area in conjuction with the proposed Paseo bridge reconstruction.

MoDOT's Transportation Matters this month has the latest development:

In response to the recently adopted River Crossing Policy and input on the I-29/I-35 Paseo Corridor Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is directing consultants to study the feasibility of bicycle/pedestrian crossings for the Missouri River. HNTB, which prepared MoDOT’s Draft EIS, and Burns & McDonnell will develop conceptual ideas and costs for potential crossings at the Paseo Bridge, Route 9 corridor, ASB railroad bridge (Armour-Swift-Burlington Bridge), and as a stand-alone structure.

MARC and MoDOT will sponsor a facilitated community workshop in September to help analyze the feasibility of various crossing types and set priorities for improving bicycle and pedestrian travel across the river. The workshop will be an opportunity for citizens and stakeholders to create a plan for river crossings: where they should be located, what kind of accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians should be made, what the region’s priorities are, and how to seek funding for such projects.
