Students ride cross-country to support KC's Negro League Baseball center
Saturday, July 15, 2006
To raise awareness about Buck O’Neil and funds for a Kansas City Negro League Baseball research center being erected in his honor, a group of students from Chief Sealth High School in Seattle are biking across the country. . . .

They started the trip Wednesday, and will arrive in Kansas City on Aug. 4.

Along their route, the students will ask city officials and local dignitaries to sign their bats. They’re also trying to collect 10,000 signatures, which they’ll later turn into a composite picture of O’Neil. . . .

“I think it’s important for us to raise awareness about what Buck O’Neil and the other Negro League players did for civil rights and for the sport of baseball,” Zahler said.
O'Neil lives in the Kansas City area.
