Advocacy:
Paseo Bridge Bike/Ped Access: MoDOT is building a new quarter billion dollar bridge in the heart of Kansas City. It could provide the first safe bicycle/pedestrian crossing of the Missouri River near downtown Kansas City. We've been working on this for years and now it's going to move or die forever in the next month or so.
Advocacy:
Hwy 45 Bike/Ped Access: MoDOT is building a new highway through Parkville, Missouri. Guess what--their plans for accommodating bicycling and walking are inadequate, plus they forgot to include any funding for them.
Advocacy:
Bicycling License Plate: Many other states have 'Share the Road with Bicycles' license plates. Why not Missouri, too? In 1 minute you can show your support.
11 JUNE 2007: Support the Bicycle Commuter Act
Monday, June 11, 2007
If you live in the district if Missouri Congressman Kenny Hulshof, please take a couple of minutes to email Representative Hulshof with the message, "I support the Bicycle Commuter Act sponsored by Congressman Blumenauer--please support its inclusion in the Energy Bill".
Hulshof represents the 9th District, which includes Columbia, Washington, Warrenton, Hermann, Kirksville, Louisiana, Fulton, Eldon, and points in between.
Here is more info from the BikeLeague:
"Congressman Blumenauer has been hard at work to have the Bicycle Commuter Act included in the Energy Bill being marked up by Ways and Means on Wednesday June 13... Now is a great time for you and your membership to let your representatives know this is a priority."
The Bicycle Commuter Act is a low-cost (est. less than $10 million a year), equitable extension of the existing tax breaks enjoyed by motorists and transit users to cover the cost of parking and tickets respectively. It's a simple solution to encourage behavior that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote healthy lifestyles, ease congestion etc. You know the drill. The bill currently has 55 cosponsors, which is the highest we've had.
So please, write tomorrow - Tuesday - and let's get this thing done! And if you aren't in one of these districts, your time will come!
