Katy Trail: Dispute over Taum Sauk lawsuit settled
Monday, June 04, 2007
A recent court decision will help the negotiations over reparations for the 2005 Taum Sauk disaster. Part of the settlement may include use of Rock Island railroad corridor to connect the Katy Trail to Kansas City.

AmerenUE controls both the Taum Sauk reservoir and the Rock Island railroad corridor.

According to Legal Newsline:
Missouri Attorney General and 2008 Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Jay Nixon now has the Ameren dam-burst lawsuit all to himself.

Reynolds County Judge William Camm Seay ruled yesterday that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) could not intervene in Nixon's civil lawsuit against Ameren. . . .

Nixon sued shortly after one billion gallons of water from Taum Sauk reservoir overflowed, destroying a state park. That sparked a year-long feud between the attorney general and the DNR, which failed to intervene in Nixon's suit in January this year.
One of the results of this decision is that the DNR and the Attorney General are now working together to put forward a unified settlement proposal for the Taum Sauk disaster.

Since Ameren owns both the Taum Sauk and the Rock Island/Katy Trail to Kansas City connection, this is a golden opportunity to include the Katy Trail connection as part of the settlement.

If the connection doesn't happen now, it is could be decades before another similar opportunity arises.

Please take two minutes and send a message asking the Attorney General and the DNR to support the Katy Trail Connection as part of the settlement.
