Summary of bicycle and pedestrian injury and fatality data in Missouri, 2002-2006
Thursday, October 04, 2007
The Missouri Highway Patrol's Statistical Analysis Center compiles official traffic crash statistics for Missouri.

Here is a summary of that data for the years 2000-2006 for bicyclists and pedestrians:

CRASHES INVOLVING BICYCLISTS IN MISSOURI

2000: 9 killed (0.9%), 749 injured (1.5%)
2001: 6 killed (0.6%), 655 injured (1.3%)
2002: 16 killed (1.5%), 641 injured (1.3%)
2003: 9 killed (0.8%), 655 injured (0.4%)
2004: 2 killed (0.2%), 635 injured (0.4%)
2005: 8 killed (0.7%), 582 injured (0.4%)
2006: 7 killed (0.7%), 601 injured (0.5%)

Percentages are percentages of total traffic fatalities or total traffic injuries for that year.

Note 1: the number of cyclists killed jumps around rather randomly, as, statistically speaking, small numbers do. No great significance can be ascribed to the year-to-year changes in such a small sample.

Note 2: this data captures almost all bicycle fatalities, but misses approximately 90% of bicycle injuries. For an explanation of why that is so, read this article.

Note 3: Note the change in injured % between 2002 and 2003. We believe this is due to technical changes in the way the Highway Patrol prepares the data.

CRASHES INVOLVING PEDESTRIANS IN MISSOURI

2000: 87 killed (8.8%), 1587 injured (3.2%)
2001: 82 killed (8.4%), 1528 injured (3.2%)
2002: 90 killed (8.3%), 1483 injured (3.1%)
2003: 81 killed (7.3%), 1560 injured (0.9%)
2004: 86 killed (8.2%), 1581 injured (0.9%)
2005: 94 killed (8.2%), 1571 injured (0.9%)
2006: 78 killed (8.0%), 1432 injured (0.9%)
Note: This includes all those injured or killed in crashes involving a pedestrian. Not all of those injured or killed are pedestrians themselves.
