The record HPV speed was recorded in 2002 by Sam Whittingham--a blazing fast 81MPH on a flat course, no wind, completely under human power.
Now a UM-Rolla student, Jerrod Bouchard, is trying to become the fastest college student on two wheels:
Bouchard, a University of Missouri-Rolla mechanical engineering student from Camdenton, Mo., has at least two more shots — today and Friday — to break the collegiate record for a human-powered vehicle in races at Battle Mountain, Nev.
A thrown chain forced Bouchard and his team to abort their first attempt. Then, just minutes before the second attempt, a tire blew and a valve was loose. After a quick repair, Bouchard recorded a speed of 54.5 mph on his bullet-shaped recumbent bike. The collegiate record is 61.5 mph.
