Missouri River bicycle/pedestrian crossing at Jefferson City moves ahead
Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Today KOMU news covered the proposed bike/ped path across the Missouri River in Jefferson City, which will connect the city to the Katy Trail.

The bike/ped connection across the Missouri River has now been funded through a combination of a Transportation Enhancements grant and matching funds, which were raised in large part through the effort of the Missouri Parks Foundation:
Bike riders and transportation bosses unveiled a plan on Tuesday in Jefferson City to make it easier for everyone to get across the river.

Mike Allchon, the owner of Cycle Depot, is one of the many that has helped brainstorm solutions for a "Bike-Friendly" bridge.

"For the trail to go within a mile-and-a-half of the capital of Missouri, and yet not really have a good way to getting into the capital, that really is something that needs to change," said Allchorn.

"People from all over the world come to ride the Katy trail but as you can see behind me there is no safe entrance to allow them to ride from the Katy trail to Jefferson City," explained bike rider Paul Minkus.

The group made up of local officials and bike riders have proposed an idea, of building a pedestrian walkway that would hang from the bridge.

"It's something that would be more aesthetically pleasing, perhaps a little safer, less noisy route, certainly an attraction of itself that would attract people too and from across the river and back in forth from the Katy trail to Jefferson City."

This pedestrian walkway is still in the beginning stages, and will have to first get the okay from the coast guard before taking the next step.
Connecting communities across Missouri to the Katy Trail is one of the top goals of MoBikeFed in its Vision of Active Transportation in Missouri.

In the past year, we have had the following positive developments:
  • Missouri River crossing from the Katy to Hermann completed.
  • River crossing from the Katy to Jefferson City funded and now being designed
  • River crossing from the Katy to Washington, MO, under discussion
  • 11 mile extension of the Katy at its eastern end nearly complete
  • Connection between the Katy and Kansas City partly funded and partly under discussion.
